The good stuff

Man, the auto-scan feature is weirdly satisfying. Plug in your camera or memory card, and boom - new photos show up in seconds. No manual import needed. I’ve got folders going back 10 years, and Picasa sorted them all by date without me lifting a finger. Also, dragging photos between albums? Super easy. I moved 50 vacation pics into a single album with two swipes. The tagging system isn’t fancy, but adding “Mom” or “Beach Trip 2018” to a photo lets you filter later. And the batch editing? I fixed exposure on 30 shots at once - cropping, straightening, color balance - all in under five minutes. It’s not Photoshop, but it gets the job done.

The not-so-good

But here’s the thing - it hasn’t been updated in ages. The interface feels dated, like it’s from 2011. No dark mode, no proper retina scaling. And if you’re on a newer Mac with Apple Silicon, you’ll have to run it through Rosetta. Not ideal. Also, it doesn’t support modern formats like HEIC unless you convert them first. And forget about syncing across devices - that part died years ago. If you want cloud backup or live sharing, this isn’t it. Plus, the database can get wonky if you move files manually outside of Picasa. I once lost a folder because I didn’t realize it was tied to the internal index.

Bottom line

If you’re stuck with an older Mac and just need to organize a pile of old photos without paying anything, Picasa for Mac - Download for Mac still works. It’s not flashy, but it does what it says. For anyone else? There are better free tools out there now - Photos.app is built-in and way more polished. But if you're nostalgic or just don't want to learn a new app, go ahead and grab it. It’s free, it’s simple, and it’s not going to break your computer. Just don’t expect miracles.
