The good stuff

What actually surprised me was how smooth the CSS Grid editor felt. Dragging columns around and seeing live changes? Yeah, that’s useful. And the fact that it handles SASS and LESS right in the same window means I don’t have to switch tools. I was building a layout with responsive breakpoints and just adjusting values in the visual editor - no manual math, no guesswork. Also, the Repeater feature for copying elements (up to 12 times) saved me from doing repetitive copy-paste. I made a product grid in under five minutes. That’s real time saved.

And the Pug support? Not something I’d expect in a free tool. Being able to write simplified syntax and see the output in real time was a solid win. I didn’t have to go full HTML every time, especially for repetitive sections. The not-so-good

But here’s the thing - it’s not magic. If you’re used to writing HTML by hand, this feels a little slow. Every time I wanted to edit raw code, I had to jump into the HTML editor, right-click an element, and find it. It works, but it’s not as fast as just typing. And the UI? It’s functional, sure, but nothing flashy. It looks like it hasn’t gotten a serious overhaul since 2018. No modern dark mode, no sleek animations - just… there.

Also, the lack of user reviews and downloads is telling. This isn’t some massive tool with millions using it. I found one other person on Reddit who even mentioned it. That’s not a red flag per se, but it does mean limited community help. And if you’re new to web dev, the learning curve isn’t gentle. You still need to understand classes, selectors, and how layouts work - this isn’t a “build a site in 3 clicks” kind of thing.

Bottom line

If you’re a beginner who wants to learn web design without drowning in code, Pinegrow - Download for Windows is okay. But if you already know HTML and CSS, you’re better off coding directly. It’s free, so you can try it - but don’t expect a miracle. Skip it if you’re after speed or polish. For the rest of us who want a middle ground between visual tools and actual code? It’s a low-risk experiment, but not a must-have.
