The good stuff

It’s shockingly straightforward. Open the app, click “New Entry,” type in date, description, amount, and category. That’s it. No setup wizard, no onboarding videos, nothing. I had my first entry in under 30 seconds. The interface is clean, minimal, and doesn’t try to impress you with flashy graphics. It just works. And when I needed to export data to CSV later, it worked without a hitch-something that’s surprisingly rare in free tools.

I also liked that it didn’t force me to sign in or create an account. No tracking, no ads, nothing. Just open the file, start typing. For someone like me who just wants to keep tabs on freelance work and groceries, it’s perfect. If you’re used to Excel but don’t need formulas or reports, this is a solid middle ground.

The not-so-good

But here’s the catch-it’s really barebones. No reports, no graphs, no way to categorize automatically. Every time I added a new expense, I had to manually pick a category from a dropdown. After a few weeks, I was tired of repeating “coffee” and “internet bill.” There’s no import feature for bank statements either, so I’m still copying things by hand. And if you lose your data file? Good luck recovering it. No cloud sync, no backups built in.

Also, the lack of info about the developer or version number made me a little nervous. Is this legit? Is it safe to run? Not that I found any red flags, but it’s weird for a productivity tool to be this anonymous. And with only two user votes at 7 out of 10, it’s clearly not mainstream. That’s fine if you’re okay with low visibility, but it does make support or updates feel unreliable.

Bottom line

If you need a free, no-BS ledger for Windows and don’t mind doing everything manually, Daybook - Download for Windows gets the job done. It’s not fancy, but it’s honest. But if you want reports, automation, or even decent file safety, skip it. This one’s for people who prefer control over convenience. Worth downloading if you’re in a pinch and don’t need bells and whistles. Just don’t expect anything beyond the basics.
