The good stuff

First off, the speed is legit. I’ve got a decent broadband connection, and this thing actually uses most of it. I tested it with a 6GB file, and it hit over 80 Mbps consistently - way faster than the web version of MEGA. Also, the parallel downloads feature really helps when you’re grabbing multiple files at once. I had seven files from a shared folder, and it zipped through them without slowing down. And yeah, the encryption is baked in - not something you have to fiddle with. Your files stay locked until they’re downloaded, which is nice when you’re sharing sensitive stuff. The offline access is another win. Once it’s on my PC, I can open it anytime, even if I’m not online. That’s perfect for travel or bad internet days.

The not-so-good

It’s not perfect. The interface is… barebones. No frills. If you’re used to something like Dropbox or OneDrive, this feels a bit like going back to dial-up era design. Also, it doesn’t show progress for individual files unless you’re watching the main window - so if you’re downloading 20 things, it’s hard to tell which ones are stuck. And if you’re not already signed into MEGA, you’ll need to log in each time. Not a huge deal, but annoying if you’re doing frequent downloads. Oh, and no built-in search in the app - you have to go to the website to find files. Kinda weird for a desktop app. Also, since the developer is unknown, there’s zero support if something breaks. You’re on your own.

Bottom line

If you’re looking for a no-frills, fast, free way to download large files from MEGA - especially in a work setting - MegaDownloader - Download for Windows is worth trying. It’s not flashy, but it gets the job done without drama. For personal use, it’s solid. For teams? Even better. Just don’t expect polish. But hey, it’s free, and it works. So unless you’re picky about looks, give it a shot. You won’t regret it.
