The good stuff

Man, the grading system is a lifesaver. You can drop scores directly into the gradebook after students submit their assignments, and it auto-calculates averages. No more spreadsheets. I had a student turn in a 15-page paper with three separate parts - Moodle let me comment on each section individually, which saved me so much time compared to marking up a Word doc. And the forums? They’re basic, sure, but they actually work. Students can reply to each other without me needing to jump in every five minutes. It feels less like babysitting and more like letting people learn together.

The not-so-good

It’s not exactly pretty. The interface looks like it’s from 2010, and if you’re used to modern web apps, it might feel clunky at first. There’s zero mobile app polish - you’re stuck with a browser, which means it’s not great for quick checks on your phone. Also, setting up permissions and roles takes a few tries. I spent an hour figuring out how to give a TA access to only one course instead of all of them. Not intuitive, but once you get past that, it holds steady.

Bottom line

If you’re teaching or managing online courses and don’t want to rely on Google Classroom’s limited tools, Moodle - Download for Mac is worth the download. It’s free, it’s reliable, and it won’t crash when you’ve got 30 students submitting work. Just expect to spend a little time learning how it ticks. For educators who need structure over style, this is solid. And yeah, it’s not sexy - but sometimes that’s exactly what you need.
