I ended up downloading SUPER - Download for Windows after my phone wouldn’t play a video I’d ripped from a DVD. Nothing else seemed to handle the format, and I was tired of wrestling with bloated converters. This thing popped up in a search, looked lightweight, and honestly? It just worked. The good stuff

It’s weirdly satisfying how simple it is. The interface isn’t flashy, but it’s clean-audio and video sections separated, three dropdowns at the top for output settings. I used it to make a video playable on my old PSP, and it handled the H263 encoding without any fuss. The bit rate options go all the way up to 9792 Kbps, which is wild if you’re trying to squeeze out quality. And yeah, it uses FFmpeg and mencoder under the hood-so the conversion engine is solid, even if the app itself looks like it hasn’t been touched since 2010.

Also, the player preview feature is nice. After converting, I could hit “Play” right there and check the result instantly. No need to open another app. And tweaking brightness, contrast, or aspect ratio? That’s a small win for someone who’s fiddling with old home videos.

The not-so-good

But don’t get me wrong-it’s not perfect. The codec selection is narrow. Only two video codecs (H263 and MPEG-4), and three audio ones. AAC, AMR wideband/narrowband. If you’re doing anything modern like HE-AAC or AV1, this won’t cut it. Also, audio is stuck on one channel and 8000 Hz sampling. So no stereo, no higher quality sound. That’s a hard limit for anyone serious about audio.

And the lack of progress tracking can be frustrating. You see the list of files, but no real-time status bar. Sometimes it feels like it’s frozen, especially with larger files. And the “downloads” count? N/A. That’s suspicious. Maybe it’s not super popular anymore, but I’ve seen versions floating around older forums for years. Not exactly new and shiny.

Bottom line

If you need to quickly convert a video for an old device and don’t care about fancy features, SUPER - Download for Windows is worth the download. It’s free, it works, and it doesn’t ask for your life story. But if you want better audio, more formats, or a modern interface, look elsewhere. For basic tasks, though, it’s a reliable little tool that still holds up.
